什么是美国打工旅游？What's Work and Travel in USA?

现在都很流行打工旅游 (work and travel/ working holiday)

很多国家，例如美国，澳洲，加拿大，纽西兰，韩国，日本等

都不时提供了打工旅游或学生交换的program

让我们有很好的机会可以到国外体验一下不一样的生活，学习不同的文化，认识更多来自世界不同角落的朋友

前言

刚开始也是三心二意

有计划要去USA Work and Travel (WAT) 了

不过因为某原因有决定要去澳洲的Working Holiday Program
但每一年澳洲政府只是offer 100个Working Holiday的Visa 给马来西亚公民

申请的过程也是弄到我头昏脑胀

要准备很多文件，户口要有RM15K(大概AUD5K)，Letter of Good Conduct等等

我和朋友花了很多时间准备文件，还特地跑去Putrajaya政府部门

结果还是预不到visa interview的时间，就此罢休了

(很失望，最后还是决定去美国的）

相信很多大学生都知道美国打工旅行这个program

但还是有很多人其实还不是很了解，到底什么是美国打工旅游？

美国打工旅游

顾名思义就是美国政府开放给外国学生在暑假期间，有机会前往美国打工及旅游的机会

属于J-1交换游客签证的组别。只是，它不同于一般的观光，商务签证，

J-1签证多注重于来美做文化交流的观光客

每一年有大约90,000 名学生参与这个工旅计划哦。美国政府会委派sponsors (CIEE,GeoVisions,WISE,JanusDynamic Global Exchange,Alliance Broad Group和Council for Educational Travel USA) 

帮忙处理参加者的入境文件+Visa+短期工作准证DS 20-19 form/ Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1)，这些都是在申请过程中必须要获得申请的文件

Sponspors也会协助申请者寻找适合的工作以及给予在美的参加者必要的支援协助

CIEE (Council on International Education Exchange) 是sponsors中最大的赞助者

每年有30,000申请者在他的协助下到美国打工旅游哦

此外，Sponsors会委派当地的Country Agents

(在马来西亚就只有Speedwing或Out of the Box) 协助于面试筛选

准备所需的文件以申请DS 20-19 form，解决申请者在申请过程中的问题

以及准备申请者到美国大使馆申请Visa的手续等

合法在美国打工（最长可在美工作4个月,並享有工作結束后在美国合法停留30天的旅游特权哦）

严格说起来，是可以在美国逗留5个月的时间哦

參加WAT的学生是受美国法律保护的

所有雇主都必须事先受CIEE (Council onInternational Education Exchange) 审核

美国政府也会着手规划学生的薪金，保险及相关的支援。

申请资格

• 必须是大专(Diploma/Degree)以上的全职学生（full-time student）
• 申请签证时，申请者需介于年满18岁---30岁以下
• WAT结束后人具有学生的身份
• 拥有足够的英文能力，以应付在美国工作所需

*毕业生，外国学生都被允许及鼓励参加，不过申请资格有待审核

条件如下：

• 必须在完成final exam/FYP/internship的6个月内出发到美国
• 必须在完成Diploma/Degree/Master Courses前提出申请（在毕业典礼前）
• 所选择的season(Summer/Winter)将依照申请者的sem break或course completion加以分配

打工旅游季节

美国政府限制允许2个季节哦

夏天 : 15 May – 15 Sep

冬天 : 15 Nov – 8 Mar

因为美国一些入境政策的问题，所以原本有summer,spring,autumn和winter 4个季节
换成summer(May 15th  – September 15th)和winter (November 15th  – March 15th)了
所以要申请的朋友们注意一下哦

工作种类

工作的类型主要以观光服服务的季节性相关工作为主

工作的地点遍布全美国，且位于热门的观光景点，著名的大型主题乐园、国家公园

其他的工作机会还有旅馆、度假村、零售业和餐饮业为多（有机会征收小费$$）

性质都是劳务型的体力工作，比如清洁，打扫，贩售，洗涤，收银等等

原则上我们可以选择自己比较偏好的工作种类及地点

但是除了個人的语言程度需胜任以外，也必须要有一定的责任感，高度配合雇主的人力要求以及调配

这绝对是参加此打工旅游最重要的原则

打工旅游目的

可以利用暑假在美国工作的机会：

• 好好的体验当地的风土民情
• 结交来自世界各国的朋友
• 了解異国文化与生活，达到文化交流的目的
• 有助于增长語言能力
• 工作之余，順利完成工作后，可以利用工作所得在美旅遊30天

要申请此打工旅游，必须通过Agent来帮忙处理复杂的申办手续

在马来西亚，有2间Agency负责帮忙学生处理有关申请手续

我是通过Speedwing Malaysia 申请的

不过到后来发现他们的service态度不太好，会比较建议选择OOTB
之后会提到建议OOTB而放弃Speedwing的原因

通关他们的官网填写及上传申请表格后
Agent 会陆陆续续地email很多有关工作的邮件
内容会列出工作的性质，地点，价钱, 时间等等，让我们可好好考虑做选择
选好了工作，也得决定工作开始和结束日期 交上去，
经过非正式skype interview, 得到邮件宣告所选择工作通过了，才安排我们到美国大使馆面试
面试通过了，也迅速和朋友订去美国的机票^^

What is Work and Travel USA?

It is a US Department of State authorized work exchange program that allows international students to work and travel in the USA under a US J-1 sponsor during their major school vacation. It is not for students to gain practical training, apply classroom knowledge, complete compulsory work attachment/internship programs unless otherwise stated by their institutions, or seek permanent work opportunities or long-term career in the USA. All participants must come back to Singapore at the end of the program.

• Are you eligible?

You can participate in Work and Travel USA if you:

• are over 18 years of age
• are enrolled as full time tertiary education student
• have a term break of at least 2 months
• course of study must be at least two years in duration
• can communicate in English

*Final semester,foreign students and graduating students are allowed to apply and accepted based on individual basis. But you have to depart to US within 6 months after your course completion.

*May travel to the US within 6 months after  final exam/FYP/internship. Just remember to apply BEFORE finish the course (NOT THE GRADUATION CEREMONY). The season that allow to  travel will depend on when the completion/semester break is. 

• When can I go?

Work & Travel is available 2 seasons a year.

Summer : 15 May – 15 Sep

Winter     : 15 Nov – 8 Mar

• How long can I stay in the US?

We allow to stay in the State for 5 months the most (work for 2-4 months and travel for 30days)

Before you choose the employer, agent will provide you a worksheet to show you the starting & end date of your job, so you can decide what date you gonna work, finish your work, travel route and teh date you return to Singapore/Malaysia.

Everything is up to our own decision. As me, the start & end date offer by my employer if from 1st Dec to 15 March which mean i need to work for 3.5 months and travel within the State for another 30days.

Good thing is, you are allowed to choose how many months you wanna work (it's good to work more than 2 months, some employer require someone can work more than 3 months)and travel. 

• What kind of work?

All the jobs are entry level seasonal service industry work. 

In other word, it’s holiday jobs for students.  

Employers are hotels, restaurants, fast food in holiday area, theme parks and national parks.  

The job ranges from kitchen help, line service in fast food to front desk in a small hotel in National Park.

• Why Work and Travel USA?

 By working and living in the USA, not only will we be experiencing the American way of life first hand, we will develop self awareness and learn to value cultural differences, experiences which will be beneficial in coping with this fast changing globalized world.

What better way to improve our language skills than speaking and using English every day. We will gain confidence in speaking it without even realizing it.

     3. Improve communication skills

Being in an environment where we will need to work alongside people of diverse cultures and backgrounds, we will have the opportunity to gain confidence in communicating with total strangers, which will definitely help in our future career.

Our work experience abroad will definitely get noticed by our future employer.  It shows that we have the confidence to open ourselves to new experiences, learned to be independent, have the ability to adapt to new environments and the willingness to take up an entry level job. It takes courage to even take this first step.  We may even gain specific skills that will help you in our career or discover a new field of work that interests us.

·    5. Independence

Whether we like it or not, one day we will need to make our own decisions. There is no easy way but to just do it.  We will learn to solve problems in an unfamiliar environment and manage every aspect of our life. Although guidance will be provided,we will gain much confidence from this experience.

·    6. Personal Development

Learning a different culture, planning our own time and money, and gaining a wider perspective on the outside world will ultimately help to define us. We may not even be immediately conscious of how this will benefit us in the long run.

 How will we gonna spending our holiday otherwise?  We stand to meet and make lifetime friends – as well as having a memorable holiday.
